MELLETTE, S.D. (AP) - A new post office is scheduled to open Monday in Mellette.

The old post office in the northeastern South Dakota community was abruptly closed two years ago after being deemed unsafe.

The community built a new facility that it’s leasing to the U.S. Postal Service. Agency spokesman Pete Nowacki tells the American News (https://bit.ly/1WEeQvF ) that the building has been inspected and is set to open at 7:30 a.m. Monday.

The 764-square-foot building has a retail window and 123 post office boxes.

About 200 people live in Mellette.
