LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas police say they’re still searching for the right fit when it comes to bulletproof vests for their K-9 unit.

The department already has vests but they’re too bulky and heavy for the department’s 19 patrol dogs.

Tasked with running and jumping after suspects across the valley, the animals can easily overheat and struggle in the desert weather conditions.

Officials say they’re still researching for the best designs.

The department has the money to buy new ones, which can range from $700 to $2,000 each.

A flush of donations came in for its K-9 operations following the death of Nicky the patrol dog, who this year was stabbed by a suspect on a call and then accidentally killed by an officer during another call.
