SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - One of the oldest giraffes in North America has died at Utah’s Hogle Zoo.
Zoo officials said Tuesday in a press release that the giraffe named Daphne was 31-years-old when she died. They say she lived twice as long as the average giraffe.
Zoo staff members say they euthanized Daphne after they found the giraffe’s health significantly declining over the past few months. The giraffe wasn’t eating very much food, was in pain and was most recently found lying on the ground, which officials say is very unusual for her.
Daphne first came to the Utah zoo about three decades ago.
The Hogle Zoo now has three female giraffes and one adult male.
