GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) - The company that owns an underground natural gas pipeline that exploded into a massive fireball last month says a western Pennsylvania highway damaged in the blast should reopen by Friday.
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials tell the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (https://bit.ly/1Xug5fk ) that Spectra Energy Corp. has said repairs to Route 819 should be complete by then.
The April 29 explosion scorched 40 acres, seriously burning a man whose home was destroyed and damaging several other structures in Salem Township, about 25 miles east of Pittsburgh.
The federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has reported finding corrosion indicating a “possible flaw” In materials used to coat welded joints of the 30-inch pipeline installed in 1981.
PennDOT must sign off on the repairs before the road reopens.
