COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A former Richland County sheriff’s deputy has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison for her role in several fraud schemes.

The State newspaper reported (https://bit.ly/1WPC6H4) that 40-year-old Maribel Crespo was sentenced Monday in Columbia.

Crespo pleaded guilty in February to one count of preparing false state income returns and agreed to testify against other former deputies. She originally had been charged with 11 counts of preparing a false tax return and faced up to 55 years in prison.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Crespo’s activities included trafficking in counterfeit goods, impersonating a federal agent and tax fraud.

Officials said Crespo helped five deputies falsify their tax returns.

Sheriff Leon Lott announced the scam and fired the officers in October 2014.
