SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The National Forest Service is considering charging $6 per vehicle for the use of popular trails in Utah’s Big and Little Cottonwood canyons.
The agency says it doesn’t have enough money to keep up with the 5 to 6 million visitors each year, and the fees would go toward maintaining trail heads, bathrooms, trails, picnic sites and parking areas.
The proposed fee would be good for three days and only apply to sites with amenities. Visitors could also buy a $45 annual pass that could also be used at American Fork Canyon and Mirror Lake Highway.
The public will be able to comment on the plan until September 9. The fee would go into effect in June 2017.
