CHAMBERS, Neb. (AP) - Goose Lake Wildlife Management Area in northern Nebraska will reopen this weekend after the area has been treated to keep an invasive aquatic plant from spreading.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says the area will reopen Saturday.
Goose Lake was treated because of an infestation of Eurasian watermilfoil.
The plants’ leaves or stem fragments can easily be carried on boats, trailers and other aquatic sporting equipment to other bodies of water.
The plants can spread rapidly from leaves and grow up to 2 inches a day. Their dense surface mats interfere with boating, fishing and swimming.
The lake is about 10 miles southeast of Chambers in southern Holt County.
Officials will monitor plant growth at the lake and treat the boat ramp to keep it clear of vegetation.
