JAMESTOWN, R.I. (AP) - A police officer who was among two people killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 95 in Rhode Island died on the one-year anniversary of his graduation from the police academy.

Jamestown patrolman Ryan J. Bourque was killed early Monday on I-95 South in East Greenwich.

Police say the 24-year-old patrolman was heading home to Coventry after finishing up his 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift when his Dodge Charger was hit head-on in the high-speed lane by a Toyota Camry being driven the wrong way by 23-year-old Dejae T. Pizarro, of Bedford, Massachusetts. Pizarro was also killed.

The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1YWc5Db ) that Pizarro made an illegal U-turn on the highway. Police say he drove the wrong way for more than a mile before colliding with Bourque’s car.
