DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The Des Moines City Council says a resident can’t keep the vinyl window that looked just like the broken one he’d replaced in his River Bend historic district home.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1TJDHeF ) the council Monday upheld the city’s Historical Preservation Commission’s order that says the vinyl replacement window John Wise had installed must be replaced by a wood-frame window.

Wise says he didn’t know he was breaking any rules when he installed the vinyl window in 2012. Under the historic district rules, the other vinyl windows on the house may remain because they were installed before the neighborhood became a historical district. But the rules also say that when those vinyl windows break their replacements must duplicate the original wood windows.
