SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Spartanburg voters will get to decide in November whether to allow Sunday some alcohol sales in stores.
News outlets report that by a vote of 6 to 1, the City Council on Monday passed the second reading of an ordinance concerning the sale of beer and wine at grocery stores and convenience stores. The referendum, which is for off-site consumption, will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot.
Sunday sales of alcohol are banned statewide in South Carolina, but the ban can be overturned by voters in individual counties and municipalities.
A 2003 referendum made it possible for the city’s bars and restaurants to sell alcohol on Sundays for on-site consumption.
Several surrounding cities, including Greenville and Greer, already allow retail sales of beer and wine on Sundays.
