OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (AP) - Police say an SUV has struck and killed a man and woman who got out of their car when it broke down on the Long Island Expressway.

Two passengers who remained in the car, as well as the SUV driver, were injured.

The victims who died were a 20-year-old man and 18-year-old woman. None of the victims’ identities were immediately released.

The crash happened in a high-occupancy-vehicle lane around 11 p.m. Monday. The highway was closed there for four hours.

The victims’ eastbound 2004 BMW broke down between exits 39 and 40. They were struck by a 2016 GMC Yukon.

Police say both vehicles will get brake and safety checks. They say there is no apparent criminality.
