MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin employers could see another drop in unemployment insurance taxes in 2017 due to an improved economy and employer-friendly changes in the system.
Wisconsin’s unemployment insurance trust fund had a $1.3 billion deficit in 2010 following the Great Recession. Gov. Scott Walker’s office said Tuesday it now sits at a $1 billion balance.
That means employers who pay taxes into the fund can likely pay less next year for the second consecutive year.
According to a news release, last year’s lower tax schedule saves employers $97 million annually. Next year’s projected change would save them another $38 million annually. Some employers might not see any decrease, while others will see a larger decrease, depending on how much they use the fund. The annual savings would average about $1,000 per employer.
