BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Both the House and Senate have cast unanimous votes in support of a proposal seeking to provide more information to people about how to care for their loved ones when they are discharged from hospitals.
The bill would require hospitals to give each patient the opportunity to designate a caregiver. Hospitals would have to attempt to consult with designated caregivers and give them discharge plans describing patients’ after-care assistance needs.
The House voted 94-0 for the measure Tuesday. The proposal by Sen. Yvonne Dorsey Colomb, a Baton Rouge Democrat, returns to the Senate for consideration of House changes.
AARP Louisiana says more than 20 other states have similar laws. Gov. John Bel Edwards supports the bill.
