PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Portland Public Schools have a new superintendent.
School board members voted Tuesday night to approve Xavier Botana to become the district’s next head. Botana will begin a 3-year term in July.
He will be Portland’s sixth superintendent in nine years.
Botana was born in Cuba. He has worked in school districts in Chicago, Illinois, Indiana, and Portland, Oregon. Botana had been associate superintendent of Michigan City Area Schools in Indiana since 2010.
Botana says he’s honored to serve in the position and thrilled to have the opportunity.
Board Chair Marnie Morrione says they’re excited to welcome Botana.
Former Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk left last summer to take a job as superintendent of schools in Lexington, Kentucky. Jeanne Crocker had served as interim superintendent during a search for Caulk’s successor.
