BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The first African lion cub to be born at the Buffalo Zoo in 25 years finally has an official name three months after his birth.
Zoo officials announced Tuesday that the cub has been named Tobias by staffers who have taken to calling him by his nickname, Toby.
The cub was born in February to parents Lelie and Tiberius. He was one of four cubs born in the litter but the only one to survive past the first couple of days.
Zoo officials announced the surviving cub’s birth in late April.
Despite his mother’s difficulty with nursing as a first-time mother, officials say Tobias has grown to nearly 20 pounds.
Zoo keepers are still planning the cub’s public debut in the lion exhibit.
