COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A police officer is still in the hospital after being struck while on the side of a freeway leading out of downtown Columbia.

Local media outlets report that Officer Pete Conklin was helping a driver on the side of Interstate 126 when he was hit by another driver at around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Lance Corporal David Jones says Conklin was taken to a hospital for several injuries, including wounds to his arm. Officials say Conklin had surgery and is recuperating. He has been with the department for five years.

The driver of the car that hit Conklin was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.
