TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Officials in northwest Ohio have learned that modernizing the Toledo water plant to fend off Lake Erie algal toxins will cost $188 more than originally thought.

The Blade reports (https://bit.ly/25f3Upr ) the project was originally thought to cost about $312 million, spread out over 20 years. But the state Environmental Protection Agency demanded a faster pace in 2014 and the new cost has reached about $500 million.

The city is about 12 percent into a 10-year project to modernize the plant. It began in 2012, two years before an algae-induced water crisis.

The city is selling bonds and has obtained grants to pay for much of it, but it’s unclear how it’s going to pay off the final $188 million of the project.
