PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A New England mob associate has been indicted on a perjury charge stemming from a long-running investigation into a shakedown ring focusing on Providence strip clubs.

WPRI-TV reported (https://bit.ly/1WjkAu6) on Wednesday that Gaythorne Angell, of East Greenwich, is facing charges.

Prosecutors say the 81-year-old Angell lied to a grand jury in June 2011 when testifying about his knowledge of the extortion in the clubs.

The 2011 investigation brought down former New England mob boss Luigi “Baby Shacks” Manocchio (mah-NAH’-kee-oh), who was the head of the Patriarca crime family from the mid-1990s until 2009.

Manocchio pleaded guilty in 2012 to charges he organized the shakedown ring. He was sentenced to 5½ years in prison.

A call to Angell’s attorney, Anthony Traini, was not immediately returned.
