NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Swimming advisories have been issued at five Norfolk beaches after high levels of bacteria were found in the water.
The Norfolk Department of Public Health said in a statement that water sampling and testing conducted Tuesday revealed levels of enterococci bacteria that exceeded the state standard.
The advisory includes the beach area from Capeview Avenue through North Community Beach, and Ocean View Park. A section of beaches between 10th View and 13th View streets are also included. Signs have been posted at the effected beaches.
While enterococci bacteria do not cause illness, health officials say its presence is connected to the presence of other disease-causing organisms.
Health officials will continue testing the beach waters and remove posted signs when the bacteria levels decrease to meet state standards.
