PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A Pittsfield woman faces kidnapping and other charges for allegedly helping her teenage son flee a hospital where he was being treated for gunshot wounds to the legs.

The Berkshire Eagle (https://bit.ly/1RpZ2nD ) reports that a judge Tuesday ordered 38-year-old Cassie Stapleberg held without bail for up to 120 days.

Prosecutors say she helped her 17-year-old son escape from Berkshire Medical Center earlier this month. The kidnapping charges stem from the fact that her son was in the custody of the state child welfare authorities at the time.

The boy left the hospital without antibiotics or painkillers, and had been advised to stay off his feet.

Stapleberg’s attorney called the charges “overkill.” The lawyer says the boy left the hospital of his own accord and his mother actually tried to stop him.
