ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - A Virginia prosecutor says two police officers will not be charged in the shooting death of a black teenager who was carrying a broken BB gun.
Media outlets report that Roanoke County prosecutor Randy Leach said at a news conference Wednesday that evidence proves the officers had no choice but to shoot 18-year-old Kionte Desean Spencer.
According to authorities, on Feb. 26 police received a report of an armed, bandanna-wearing man walking near a shopping center. They say Spencer, who was wearing headphones, refused orders to drop his weapon. Police shot him with a stun gun, but that was ineffective. Authorities say when Spencer turned toward the officers, he was shot in the hip and near the collarbone.
Names and races of the officers haven’t been released.
