RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is instructing state officials to help create a new safety commission and review all accidents related to the Washington area’s struggling subway system.

McAuliffe signed the executive order Wednesday, which also directs the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation to assess the state of repair of Metro’s trains and tracks.

Metro general manager Paul Wiedefeld has said he’s found “systemic issues with regard to track, power and car maintenance” that need to be addressed.

Wiedefeld decided to shut down the system for emergency track inspections last month after an electrical fire that was similar to a fire that killed a passenger last year.
