BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The owners of a home in Burlington on the verge of falling into the Winooski River have been ordered to remove the structure from its riverfront location.
City engineer Norm Baldwin issued a dangerous building order to the property owners on Sunday that calls for them to either move or demolish the Plattsburgh Avenue home.
The safety of the home’s foundation was compromised when an embankment supporting it collapsed into the river this past weekend.
Homeowner Mariette Nys says she and her husband are discussing their options to see if they can potentially save the house.
Baldwin, along with Department of Public Works Director Chapin Spencer and other local and federal officials, have recommended that the building be demolished immediately.
There is no estimate for when the home might fall.
