MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont governor’s office says more tests on private water system in parts of Bennington are continuing to show high levels of a potentially cancer causing chemical.

Since testing began late last winter results have been received from 432 private wells in North Bennington and Bennington.

Of the total, 227 contain the chemical perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA, in concentrations over Vermont’s 20 parts per trillion health advisory limit for drinking water. The concentrations range from 20 to 2,730 ppt. Fifty wells had levels below 20 ppt. The remaining 155 wells were not found to contain PFOA.

Additional well sampling will resume next week. Residents in the sampling area can sign up to have their water tested.

Bottled water is available at a number of locations in the affected area.
