BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The state agriculture department will be able to sell ads for its state-owned property, after the Senate gave final legislative passage to the proposal.

Louisiana’s transportation and wildlife and fisheries departments already have been given permission to sell sponsorships and advertising for their trucks and other equipment to generate money for their offices.

Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain pushed for the same authority, saying sponsors could help his department buy new equipment.

Metairie Sen. Conrad Appel objected to selling advertisements for state property. He cited Interstate 49, which is largely sign-free, describing it as a “gorgeous drive.”

Delhi Sen. Francis Thompson urged support of the bill, saying the agriculture department needs the money.

Senators voted 25-13 for the bill Tuesday, sending it to the governor’s desk.
