SYLVAN BEACH, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a body has been pulled out of the Erie Canal in central New York beach after a man jumped into the waterway to retrieve his tackle box and couldn’t get out of the water.

Fire Chief Rick Johnson says the body was recovered Monday night near the state Route 13 bridge in Sylvan Beach, about 25 miles northeast of Syracuse.

State police have identified the man as 23-year-old Aaron Teater of nearby Verona.

Johnson says Teater had been fishing with relatives late Monday afternoon when his tackle box fell into the canal. He jumped in after it, but Johnson says he couldn’t pull himself up the concrete wall lining the canal. Teater’s relatives were also unable to hoist him up.

A diver found Teater’s body about three hours after he disappeared.
