PITTSBURGH (AP) - A water main break has caused a geyser-like rush of water from a manhole, closing a busy Pittsburgh street indefinitely.
The main broke early Tuesday and crews arrived to find the water shooting from the manhole about 6 a.m.
Officials with the Allegheny County Sanitation Authority say recent rains have caused debris to clog sewer outlets that enable runoff to drain into the Allegheny River. That’s why when the water main broke beneath the 10th Street Bypass that the water pulsed and shot into the air from the manhole.
Crews temporarily plugged the geyser by parking a truck on top of the manhole. They’re continuing to work to fix the water main.
It’s not clear how long that may take or how long the road will remain closed.
