MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - Prosecutors on Long Island say a New York City jail captain has been convicted of shooting his wife in the face after she told him she wanted a divorce.
Nassau County prosecutors say Brian Martin was convicted Monday of attempted murder and other charges.
They say the 38-year-old Martin was arguing with his wife on Dec. 21, 2013, when she told him she wanted a divorce. Prosecutors allege Martin then shot her using his service weapon.
His wife underwent facial reconstruction surgery after the shooting.
Martin was suspended from his job after his arrest in 2013. The New York City Department of Correction didn’t immediately comment on his employment status Tuesday.
Defense attorney Dana Grossblatt says Martin maintains the shooting was a “tragic accident” and plans to appeal.
