BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A former police officer convicted of stealing items from the Colchester Police Department’s evidence locker apologized for the crime before being sentenced in federal court.
Forty-year-old Tyler Kinney previously had asked to be spared jail time, but Judge William Sessions III sentenced him to serve four years in federal prison on Monday.
Kinney admitted last year to stealing guns, drugs and money from his former department’s evidence locker in 2014 to feed a rabid heroin addiction. Sessions also ordered Kinney to participate in a 500-hour drug rehabilitation program sponsored by the Bureau of Prisons.
With representatives from the police department on hand, an emotional Kinney said he felt that he let them down more than anyone else.
Chief Jennifer Morrison says she’s glad this portion of CPD history is over.
