SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A former Monticello police officer who pleaded guilty to breaking into the home of his estranged wife and assaulting a man has been sentenced to 10 days in jail and three years of probation.

KUTV-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1SI9Enl ) that Cole Young was sentenced Monday on reduced charges of third-degree felony burglary and misdemeanor assault as part of a plea deal.

Young was arrested in December after his estranged wife reported that he broke into her home, assaulted a man and drove off drunk.

The incident led to Young’s termination as well as the firing of police Chief Kent Adair and the demotion of San Juan County sheriff’s Sgt. Joe Harris. Adair and Harris had declined to respond to the call immediately.

Young apologized in court Monday, saying he made a mistake.
