CLEVELAND (AP) - A group seeking a $15-an-hour minimum wage in Cleveland has submitted petitions with more than 28,000 signatures supporting the measure to the city council.
The Raise Up Cleveland group wants the council to approve an ordinance establishing the wage or take the issue to voters. Cleveland.com (https://bit.ly/1NSdkm2) reports the petitions submitted Monday will be forwarded to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections for verification that the signatures are valid registered voters in Cleveland.
The council would introduce the legislation at its next regular meeting if the board identifies at least 5,000 valid signatures. The council could approve the legislation, reject it or pass an amended version.
Cleveland currently has no minimum wage. The state minimum is $8.10.
The proposal calls for setting Cleveland’s minimum wage at $15 beginning in January.
