SYOSSET, N.Y. (AP) - Long Island’s first science-focused high school is slated to close in June due to a $1 million budget gap and low enrollment.
The Doshi STEM Institute, which focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, opened in 2013.
Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1NiUC7f ) reports Nassau BOCES officials notified parents and students at a meeting Monday night on the Syosset campus.
The school’s closing will affect 46 students in grades nine through 11. That’s one-quarter less than what’s needed to keep the school going.
The projected enrollment for the 2016-2017 academic years was only 50 students.
The course work gave students the opportunity to pursue studies in engineering, research, robotics, math, physics, chemistry and biology.
