DENVER (AP) - A man charged nearly two decades after a Denver gang member was killed has been sentenced to 42 years in prison.

Prosecutors with the Denver District Attorney’s Office say 43-year-old Sheldon Long was sentenced Monday for the Oct. 30, 1996, death of 23-year-old Darryl Givens. Long previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, and his penalty was six years shy of the maximum possible sentence.

Police called to the shooting found Givens lying in the street. He died at the scene.

Givens’ case was reviewed by a Cold Case Project detective, who re-interviewed witnesses and identified Long and a co-defendant as suspects in the murder. Prosecutors say Long’s co-defendant, 45-year-old Antonio Domena, was acquitted following a trial last week.
