STOWE, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation officials say the beloved Stone Hut atop Mt. Mansfield, gutted by a fire on Christmas Eve, will be rebuilt but it won’t be cheap or easy.

Commissioner Michael Snyder tells Vermont Public Radio (https://bit.ly/1QQ7BYz ) that the historic cabin’s stone structure remains and has been stabilized, but its wood elements inside were destroyed in the blaze.

The hut was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936 and was being rented out for overnight stays.

A state fire investigation report says that the fire was unintentionally set by the son of the founder and CEO of Burton Snowboards and his friends. The Carpenter family has donated $150,000 toward rebuilding the hut.

Snyder says the restoration will begin as soon as possible.
