NEW YORK (AP) - New York City is creating a new police precinct. The move is designed to speed up emergency responses and expand coverage in the growing neighborhoods of southeast Queens.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner William Bratton said Tuesday that the new 116th Precinct will be carved out of the southern portions of the sprawling 105th Precinct.

It will serve the communities of Laurelton, Rosedale, Brookville and Springfield Gardens.

City Council Member Donovan Richards calls it a “huge victory” for residents.

A fellow Democratic council member, Barry S. Grodenchik (groh-DEHN’-chihk), says it’s the result of 40 years of community activism.

The current 105th Precinct has the fifth largest precinct population: 118,577 residents.

It’s also the 5th largest geographically - 12.43 square miles.
