ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - School officials in Buncombe County are notifying parents after five cases of chickenpox were reported at a local academy.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports (https://avlne.ws/1QRPVf8) the outbreak occurred at the Nesbitt Discovery Academy. The principal made an automated call to families on Monday and school officials sent letters on Tuesday from Dr. Jennifer Mullendore, medical director for Buncombe County Health and Human Services.
David Thompson, director of student services for Buncombe County Schools, said when at least five cases have been reported, state law and guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention allow schools to exclude students from school if they haven’t been vaccinated or haven’t already had chickenpox. Thompson said he didn’t expect anyone to fall under those scenarios.
Thompson said one teacher and four students were affected.
