ENTERPRISE, Ala. (AP) - The Enterprise police chief’s longtime assistant has been accused of using city funds to buy herself thousands of dollars’ worth of groceries and other items.

News outlets report that 44-year-old Shannon Davis, of New Brockton, was arrested Monday and charged with one count of first-degree theft of property.

Police spokesman Sgt. Billy Haglund says Davis had been Police Chief Thomas D. Jones’ administrative assistant for about 13 years. Davis resigned on Monday.

Jones launched a criminal investigation last week after noticing discrepancies in the city’s purchase orders.

Authorities say Davis purchased more than $5,000 in merchandise and charged it to the city of Enterprise over the past 18 months. It was not immediately clear whether she has an attorney.
