PHOENIX (AP) - The police chief for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community has stepped down, but still remains one of nine candidates for the Phoenix police chief position.

Patrick Melvin was placed on administrative leave on April 18. He resigned on Monday.

Tribal officials won’t provide any details about Melvin’s administrative leave or his departure from the department.

Melvin was formerly the police chief of the city of Maricopa.

Phoenix is trying to fill the position before Chief Joseph Yahner retires in October. He was appointed in February 2015.
