ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - State Sen. Hugh Farley, an upstate New York Republican first elected in 1976, says he won’t run again.

The 83-year-old Schenectady County resident says he wants to spend more time with his wife, who’s now dealing with several health issues, and with his family.

Farley says the highlights of his 40 years in the Senate include his sponsorship of New York’s 1986 Environmental Quality Bond Act, measures to protect water and regulate hazardous substances, mortgage escrow account protections and support for libraries.

Farley is part of the Republican majority in the 63-seat chamber that currently includes 31 Republicans aligned with one conservative Democrat and a coalition of five other Democrats in an independent caucus.

Farley represents the 49th Senate District, which includes Fulton and Hamilton counties and part of Schenectady, Saratoga and Herkimer counties.
