ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - Authorities have identified the body of a woman found along Interstate 26 in Orangeburg County.

The coroner’s office tells local media outlets that 34-year-old Cassandra Denise Pompey was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by a vehicle.

Last month, Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said deputies were called after a motorist reported a suspicious object by the interstate near the U.S. 301 exit. Officials found the partially clothed body of a woman with obvious head injuries.

The death is still being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
