COTTONWOOD, Ariz. (AP) - A Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputy has been cleared in the fatal shooting of a man last year during a traffic stop in Cottonwood.
The county Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday that they were unable to find any criminal wrongdoing on the part of sheriff’s Deputy Steve Gorman.
Authorities say 19-year-old Ebin Lamont Proctor was shot and killed last May 30 after Gorman chased him and got into a physical altercation.
The Attorney’s Office says Gorman did everything he could possible do during the incident to prevent the resulting outcome.
They say Proctor would not comply and forced the deputy to shoot him to ensure his own safety.
Investigators say Proctor had an active felony warrant and tests showed he had consumed methamphetamine, marijuana and alcohol before the traffic stop incident.
