BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - State wildlife and fisheries regulators will initiate a drawdown for vegetation control in Grant Parish’s Iatt Lake on May 16.

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, in a news release Tuesday, said the lake level will be lowered eight feet below pool stage to allow drying of the lake bottom, concentrating aquatic vegetation and increasing the effectiveness of herbicide applications.

The control structure will be closed no later than the first week of October to allow the lake to refill.

The drawdown is a component of the department’s integrated management plan for control of aquatic vegetation. In addition, 49,000 triploid grass carp were stocked last fall to control submerged nuisance vegetation.

Although the lake will not be closed to fishing, caution is advised of boaters during the low water period.
