ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The Mid-Hudson Bridge is home to newly hatched peregrine falcons for the 20th straight year.
New York State Bridge Authority director Joseph Ruggiero says the two hatchlings are being nurtured by both parents and “seem to be doing quite well.”
The bridge is located between Poughkeepsie and Highland and is one of five on the Hudson River with nesting boxes. The boxes were installed in the late 1980s in an effort to help re-establish the peregrine falcon in the Hudson Valley.
The species remains listed as endangered. The peregrine is a medium-sized falcon that grows to about 15 to 21 inches long and has a wingspan of more than 3 feet. It’s also the fastest bird on the planet. The top speed recorded for a peregrine dive is 242.3 mph.
