RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A treasurer of a Virginia city says publishing a list of delinquent taxpayers in a local newspaper has helped boost tax collection efforts.

Petersburg Treasurer Kevin A. Brown says making public the names of people who haven’t paid taxes has helped raise more than $581,000 from more than 70 accounts.

Brown told The Richmond Times-Dispatch (https://goo.gl/fIqJvX ) that the city needs the revenue to fund essential city services. Petersburg is facing a major financial crisis and a recent audit showed the city was $6 million in the red.

Brown said he plans to employ an outside firm to collect from taxpayers who are still delinquent.
