DETROIT (AP) - Shutoffs have begun for Detroit water customers who haven’t paid their bills.

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department began service cutoffs Tuesday. Bryan Peckinpaugh, a department spokesman, says more than 500 residential accounts were shut off by late Tuesday.

The Detroit News (https://detne.ws/1NUfRfI ) reports department officials have estimated that roughly 20,000 customers have defaulted on payments and are subject to having service turned off. The department expects change in that number with the volume of payments, averaging four each minute in the previous two days.

Peckinpaugh said there were roughly 260 calls coming into the department per hour Tuesday and more than 750 customers went to service centers to pay bills completely or join assistance programs.

The department faced protests in 2014 after delinquent accounts shutoffs.
