PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. (AP) - Police are searching for vandals who smashed granite grave markers and toppled tombstones at a historic cemetery south of Atlanta.

Peachtree City police say nearly 20 monuments weighing hundreds of pounds were pushed over and smashed to pieces.

Peachtree City police Lt. Mark Brown tells WSB-TV (2wsb.tv/26SGCr6) that desecration of a gravesite is a felony.

A Boy Scout troop plans to work to restore the cemetery.

Local Scoutmaster Kevin Snyder said he thinks the vandals had to have a sledgehammer to cause such severe damage to the granite markers.

Fayette County Commissioner Steve Brown is raising private funds to pay professionals to repair the headstones.
