AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Officials in Kennebec County have awarded a bid contract for a plan to expand a city jail to an Augusta construction company.
The Kennebec Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2fUgJ9d ) county commissioners awarded the nearly $639,000 contract to Callahan Construction at a meeting on Wednesday.
The project calls for converting an indoor recreation space into permanent inmate housing at the Kennebec County Correctional Facility. Commissioners recently received bids that were three to five times higher than expected and had to revise plans.
County administrator Robert Devlin says they were able to arrive at a lower figure after removing some items from the project and negotiating with a low bidder.
The money to build the project is coming from the jail’s capital improvement fund and surplus funds from the 2016 fiscal year.
