HANAHAN, S.C. (AP) - A man has been arrested and charged with murder after his girlfriend’s body was found in a closet of their apartment in Hanahan.
Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said in a statement that police found the body of 39-year-old Melanie Rivera on Tuesday afternoon.
Hanahan Police Capt. Michael Fowler said officers checked the apartment after getting a call from Rivera’s co-workers, who had not heard from her in several days.
Salisbury said her body had been in the closet for more than 24 hours.
Thirty-five-year-old Michael Patrick Strait Jr. was arrested during a traffic stop Tuesday night. It was not known if Strait has an attorney.
An autopsy scheduled for Thursday is expected to reveal more about how Rivera died.
There was no indication of a motive.
