LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - The trial of a Lowell man charged with raping a young girl multiple times starting when she was 6 years old has ended in a mistrial after the jury was unable to reach a verdict.

The Sun (https://bit.ly/2g2sLN9 ) reports that a judge declared a mistrial in Louis Godfroy’s case on Wednesday.

Prosecutors say Godfroy, already a Level 3 sex offender based on a 1986 conviction, sexually assaulted the girl from 2003 until 2005 when he lived with her family. Level 3 sex offenders are considered the most likely to re-offend.

The girl didn’t disclose the alleged abuse for years until a mandated reporter heard about it told police.

Godfroy’s attorney during the trial said someone else was responsible for the assaults and the girl was trying to protect him.
