AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - House Democrats have nominated Rep. Sara Gideon to be the next speaker of the Maine House of Representatives.

The House Democratic Caucus met Friday and voted by secret ballot to select Gideon, who is assistant House majority leader. Legislators will formally vote for House speaker in December.

The Democrats also selected Reps. Erin Herbig and Jared Golden as House majority leader and assistant House majority leader.

Gideon said Mainers have demanded an economy that works for everyone. Democrats say she’s worked to lower energy costs, promote renewable energy and increase access to overdose reversal medications.

GOP Gov. Paul LePage vetoed legislation championed by Gideon to reform Maine’s solar industry. Legislators are expected to take up solar legislation in January.

Democrats control the Maine House with a 77-72 majority following the election.
